With losing our touch with nature, we have forgotten the underlying beauty of these creatures in the dark that make even the night so beautiful. The sight of a hundred fireflies in a forest on a dark night is one of the most beautiful sites your eyes can withhold. Also known as lightning bugs, the insects’ dancing light patterns are an important, and nostalgic, part of Georgia summer evenings. And really that scene proved that nature is exquisite in its own unique way. Decoding each species’ unique flash and glow patterns takes time, and, although such recent books as Lynn Faust’s Fireflies, Glow-Worms, and Lightning Bugs are making this information considerably more accessible, there is still no single guide for species identification in the United States and Canada. Georgia is home to over 50 species of fireflies, more than any other U.S. The last time I saw them was in a scene from a movie called “Barfi”. In 2012, the fireflies had literally vanished from our rooms. Firefly light can be yellow, green, or orange. Males Fireflies use their flash to attract females and each species has its own pattern of light blinking. There are more than 2,000 species of fireflies in the world and these are a type of beetle. These small insects possess a magical quality as they flicker and dance through the night, creating a spectacle that delights both young and old alike. My grandpa told me that those were called fireflies.įireflies, also known as lightning bugs, have captivated the imaginations of humans for centuries with their mesmerizing glow. Being grown up in the 90s, I used to see these twinkling lights in my room just as I was about to sleep. As travelers, we should try to appreciate the surreal beauty of nature whether it is inside or outside the house. The habitat of Congaree is also slightly more unique than others with synchronous fireflies in that it’s more swampy and known as an “old growth floodplain forest”.Nature is exquisite in many ways. For two weeks in late May and early June the fireflies in Congaree will blink in unison on evenings with the right weather conditions. Just like locations in Tennessee and Pennsylvania, Photinus carolinus is the species of firefly responsible for putting on a synchronized display here. Congaree National ParkĬongaree National Park is located in South Carolina and probably one of the least known areas for synchronous fireflies in North America. The WMA has largely been untouched since WWII, and very few people are allowed to transverse most of the area, as it is controlled access however, there are greenways and access points that are open for hiking and wildlife viewing during the day. Oak Ridge is in east Tennessee near Knoxville, and the WMA is part of the U.S. ![]() In the summer of 2015, an abundant population of these fireflies was found in the Oak Ridge WMA forests. Oak Ridge WMA is home to the United States’ other species of synchronous firefly, Photuris frontalis also known as Snappy Syncs. Please contact the park for more information. Viewing is limited and controlled by a lottery. The park does offer guided viewings of the flashing events. ![]() The park contains 2,076 acres of scenic wilderness in Unicoi County, in the southern Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee. The species responsible for the displays is Photinus carolinus. Rocky Fork is a northeast Tennessee State Park and is one of the lesser known locations to view synchronous fireflies.
